    Literature Remix

    Engineers in Training

    From domestic to wild, we’re pouncing into action this week and learning all about cats! Class discussion will include questions like "Why do cats sleep so much?"     Chess has many variants and varieties to its play. Students this week will be practicing Lightning Chess, Blitz Chess, and Bughouse Team Chess. Chess players will benefit by exercising their visualization and variation-building skills through chess-like mental play and exercises. Students will be developing tactical and strategical skills through chess cross-training in Give-Away Chess, Monster Chess, Whack-A-Move Chess, and other fun chess variants. Training tournaments with swiss and round robin formats will accompany our chess practice throughout the week.

    Exploring Delicious Stories

    Story Writers

    In this class, we'll begin each day with a different piece of children’s literature, and from there, move on to an interesting lesson related to the story. Students will have the opportunity to workshop and create their very own stories while learning techniques that authors use. This is the perfect class for a child that loves books and writing. At the end of the week, students will sit in the author's chair and share their works of art with the whole class.

    Ooey Gooey Science

    This week-long science and art class encourages wonder, curiosity, and creativity with gooey projects. Children should wear play clothes that can get messy.

    Chinese Culture

    Bughouse Team Chess

    Bughouse team chess is a four-person game played between pairs of cooperating chess partners. It is played nationally with a codified set of rules. Children seeking fun team play should join us for study and practice of this unique game. No previous bughouse experience is necessary.

    Intermediate Chess

    Coding Club: Animations and Puzzles

    Students will use Scratch 3.0 to create animations and puzzles centered around their interests—they'll get to build what they love!     Introduction to Typing/Keyboarding

    Typing is an invaluable skill that takes time and lots of practice to master. This class is for students with little or no experience.     Beginning Computer Coding

    Students wishing to build an opening repertoire and develop endgame skills are welcome to join in this week of more advanced study and play. Tournament experience is recommended, along with a desire to systematize chess study in opening systems, middlegame plans and endgame procedures. Thinking methodologies, visualization approaches, and the unification of strategy with tactics will be the focus of this week’s study and tournament play. A training tournament and individual game review will accompany our chess practice throughout the week.

    No Bake, No Problem!

    In this photography workshop, students will learn the basics of using a camera and have the opportunity to enhance their skills and expand their knowledge about photography. At the end of the week, each student will take home a photobook celebrating the works they’ve created.

    The art of tie-dying is a great, simple way to upcycle unused pieces of clothing, turning them into fresh fashion for summer fun! Children may bring in items from home to dye, but we will also be supplying many different articles of clothing for all the children to create away! We’ll teach them different ties and twists as well as different dye techniques. Children will be bringing home all their creations.
     
    Big Messy Art

    Learn the basics of hand sewing, weaving, and crafting in this class, created to introduce our younger students to different types of fiber arts. Students can choose the specific projects they want to work on, such as hand-sewn puppets, pillows, woven rag rugs, bookmarks, and accessories. Sewing helps to build fine motor skills and finger dexterity, and most importantly, it will give their creative muscles a workout!

    Fun with Grub!

    This kids cooking class shows a different, creative approach to food. Students will prepare yummy snack-type foods all while expressing their inner artist. Lessons include crazy kabobs, tie-dye cake in a jar, and twisted tortilla chips. Each “chef” will design their own apron, chef’s hat, and magnetic recipe board to take home. We'll end our week with our own grub demonstration to share with others!
     
    Animals in Art

    DIY crafting can be so rewarding and therapeutic! In this class, students have the opportunity to create unique DIY craft projects they might like for their rooms or elsewhere, such as blankets, flower boxes, and garlands. The experience of creating useful items gives a sense of achievement and purpose, as well as sparking joy and satisfaction to the crafter. Working on the projects themselves can be calming and help develop focus and mindfulness.
     
    Recycled Cardboard Zoo Animal Sculptures

    This week, students will be given instruction on how to make simple sketches of animals, and then they'll select their favorite zoo animals and work on their own designs to create them in three dimensions using cardboard, paints, and other materials. Finally, the whole class will be encouraged to work together to make a model zoo in which to display our creatures for our mini open house on the last day.

    Making soaps and bath bombs is a creative, hands-on approach to learning chemistry. The science behind making these two fizzy and fragrant items is fantastically fascinating!     Machine Sewing

    Students are invited to learn a skill they will use for a lifetime and a hobby they will forever enjoy… sewing! No experience necessary; appropriate for students with either beginning or more advanced sewing skills. New students will learn machine safety and beginner sewing techniques, while more experienced students will have the opportunity to expand on skills they already have. The class will begin with a simple project and then students will advance at their own pace to more exciting and challenging projects throughout the session. Many fun and different patterns are presented each time! Please note: For new students, attending on Monday (the first day of class) is mandatory, as that is when they will learn how to use the machines and important safety tips.

    We’re up-cycling materials this week, making cool art projects with recycled and easily found materials! Bringing their imaginations to school, children should arrive ready to create maybe a monster, some jewelry, possibly a mask, whatever they can think of! The class is about being creative and having fun. Class discussion will include where the item comes from, what it’s made of, and where it goes when recycled. Environmental lessons will focus on reduce, reuse, and recycle.
     
    Knitting

    Jewelry Making

    Take your accessory game to the next level with our jewelry design class! Students will start with simple projects like clay beads and macramé, then move on to more complex techniques with wire wrapping, chain and leather work, beading and weaving. Students will be creating layered necklaces, chandelier earrings, gemstone rings, and more. Supplies include organic and re-purposed materials, fun gemstones, studs, and rhinestones.

    Have you ever read a comic book and wanted to make your own? Now's your chance! In this class, students will draw their own comic books using traditional art supplies.     Historically thought of as a utilitarian craft, quilting has now been found to improve well-being and coordination and strengthen math skills. This class will start with a simple nine-square pillow, and then advance to more complex quilting patterns like the optical sawtooth and electric fan.
