Classes for Ages 5-14

Vanessa Miller, director of the Summer Program performing arts classes and The Evergreen School’s music and drama specialist, leads this experienced staff of teaching artists, all inspired to create fun-filled adventures for every student.
Our Performing Arts program welcomes all students interested in theater and music performance, from beginning to advanced levels. Master artists instruct students in acting, singing, dancing, creative movement, improvisation, musical instruments, and behind-the-scenes work. Our program aims to promote self-esteem, imaginative thinking, and self-expression while also supporting literacy and problem-solving skills. 
Step in Time: An Introduction to Dance
Ages 5-6

Ballet, jazz and modern combine in this introductory dance class inspired by none other than Mary Poppins! Each day students will learn about the story through books and activities, participate in dance lessons, and learn a short piece of choreography inspired by the classic film. Students are encouraged to enroll in both weeks, but have the option to enroll in just one. The entire experience will be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
 
Storytelling Through Classical Ballet: Coppelia, Swan Lake, Peter and The Wolf, and More!

Dolls come to life when dance, music, and storytelling combine in this comprehensive introductory class to classical ballet. Each day, students will dive into a ballet, learning the history and experiencing the story through music, books and video clips. A daily ballet class will teach fundamental technique before applying their knowledge and skills to a short piece of choreography from the ballet.
 
Hip Hop Dance
Ages 8-11

Join us for a fun week learning about the dance of hip hop! Two parts hip hop, one part modern dance, one part martial arts, and one part ballet … mix it all in a blender and shake it up in the summer heat, then throw it on a stage and make a stunning dance piece incorporating all these different genres of dance. Students should wear sneakers and comfortable clothing each day.
 
Musical Theater: Songs from Mary Poppins
Ages 9-13

If your child is a fan of Mary Poppins or Mary Poppins Returns, then don't miss this awesome opportunity! In this rehearsal class, students will rehearse and stage production numbers from both movies and develop skills in dancing, hip hop, singing and rapping. On the last day, we will share a performance with friends and family.
 
Tech Theater: Scenery and Props
Ages 10-14
June 24-28 and/or July 15-19

A hands-on experience for those who like to be behind the scenes! This week is filled with design projects such as set construction, painting stage flats, and building props for our summer productions of Frozen or Honk. Working with different materials, operating power tools safely and learning paint techniques are just some of the fun activities in this project-packed theater class.
 
Video Game Music  
Ages 10-13
June 24-28, July 8-12 and/or July 22-26

In this class, students will discover how to make their own music in the old-fashioned, retro style of 8-bit video games. Class discussion will be about the “chiptune” music genre and the history of video game music. At the end of the week, students will have their own CD to bring home featuring their created music loops.
 
Bollywood Dance

Bollywood is a huge film industry in Mumbai, India. Students will be learning a choreographed dance routine from popular Hindi/Bollywood songs. Bollywood dancing is a fun way to get a dose of cardio and good exercise! Dance steps and routines will be introduced, and basic Hindi key words and phrases will be taught and spoken. On Friday of this week, our class will invite others to show what we’ve learned.
 
Electronic Music
Ages 10-13

What is electronic music? It is a hip music genre. In this class, children will have a chance to work with a professional electronic music recording artist and learn how to create this type of music, using the recording software Ableton Live to make beats, dance tracks, soundscapes, and original compositions.
 
Creative Drama: Magical Kingdoms
Ages 5-6

In our Magical Kingdoms class, students will travel to faraway places and explore the secrets and mysteries hidden in the walls of ancient castles. Using their bodies and voices, students will bring to life stories featuring wizards, witches, dragons, queens and kings, and all the characters that are in the castles of their imaginations. Each day is filled with stories, craft projects, games, and movement. On the final day, students will act out a story for friends and family.
 
We Got Annie: A Dance Adventure
Ages 7-8
July 8-12 and/or July 15-19

Each day students will learn about the story through books and activities, participate in a dance lesson, and learn a short piece of choreography inspired by the classic play. Two weeks. Two shows on Friday, July 19, one at 3:00 p.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. in the Evergreen Theater. Full attendance on all ten days of rehearsal and for both performances is required for participation. Children 11 or 12 years old should only participate in one of our summer musicals (Frozen or Honk).
Calling actors, singers, and dancers! The Evergreen School Summer Performing Arts Program is putting on the first of two big shows this summer and we need your talent! In this two-week production class, students become members of a small cast, and each day is filled with fun activities that build skills in musical theater performance. Every student enrolled receives a copy of the music, a rehearsal cd and the script in advance of rehearsals. Auditions take place on the first day of class. On the last day, July 19, in partnership with our Backstage Crew and Costume Crew classes, actors will present two big performances (3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.) complete with sets, costumes and lights. Our performing arts program has a team of five experienced teaching artists all led by Evergreen’s Vanessa Miller.

A hands-on experience for those who like to be behind the scenes of a big production! Every day this week, students will be studying with a professional theater designer and building different costume pieces to be used by cast members in our summer productions of Frozen and/or Honk. Working with different materials, learning about color, sewing with a needle and thread, and practicing different paint techniques are just some of the fun activities in this project-packed theater class.
 
Creative Drama: Buried Treasure
Ages 5-6

This week, students dive into the deep seas of their imaginations in search of buried treasure! Activities include discovering a long lost map which will lead them to unknown worlds, and meeting colorful characters aboard the ship of Adventure. Each day is filled with stories, craft projects, games and movement. On the final day, students will act out a story for friends and family.
 
Tech Theater: Costume Crew for Frozen
Ages 10-14

Students in this class are part of the magic behind the scenes of our Frozen musical. As a member of the small crew of costume assistants, students will be altering costumes, assisting with hair and make-up, and organizing quick costumes changes. This is a fun, project-packed theater class for the aspiring designer. By enrolling in this class, students are making a commitment to being present for both performances on Friday, July 19 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. assisting with costuming.
 
Tech Theater: Backstage Crew for Frozen

Students in this class are part of the magic behind the scenes of our Frozen musical. This small team of students will learn about the technical elements of focusing lights, operating a sound board, and being on the backstage crew, shifting scenic elements in time with musical transitions. By enrolling in this class, students are making the commitment to being present for both performances on Friday, July 19 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to run all backstage tech.

Creative Drama: Forest Fantasy

In Forest Fantasy, students will bring to life the magical characters that are found sleeping on mossy beds, or hiding in fallen logs, or playing in babbling brooks. Each day is filled with stories, craft projects, games, and movement. On the final day, students will act out a forest fantasy for friends and family.
 
Mystery Theater
Ages 7-10

Join this team of detectives leading the investigation to help tie clues together and solve an original story mystery. Using various prompts such as pictures, found objects, typed-written notes, students will create an original play filled with complex characters and surprising events. Each day is filled with activities in creating a character, writing dialogue, and staging a scene. On the last day, students share their collaborative mystery with family and friends.
 
Out of the Box Costumes
Ages 7-10

This is the perfect class for the young budding costume designer with a rich imagination for storytelling. Every day, students will explore the art of simple costume design by working with fabric and color choices, and constructing costume pieces. At the end of the week, students take home a one-of-a-kind box of costumes for future plays and at-home performances.
 
Beyond Hamilton: Self-Expression through Rap
Ages 10-14

Learn the art of rap and unlock your voice through rhythm and language in this fun and inspiring performance-based class. Develop your skills as a writer, learn how to write lyrics to original beats, free up your physical expression, and sharpen your delivery and flow. On the last day, rappers will take to the stage to perform for family and friends.
 
Digital Music Composition
Ages 10-14

In this class combining technology and music, students will explore music creation with PC computer technology. Lessons include learning audio looping, generating digital sounds from scratch, voice recording, mixing tracks together, and much more. Students will be able to experiment with programs such as Magix Music Maker and Sony Acid Music Studio (both similar to Apple’s GarageBand). The class week ends where each child has created their own CD, or individual mp3s, to bring home and share with friends and family.
