  • Fine Arts

    Art Sparks

    Recycled Cardboard Zoo Animal Sculptures
    Ages 6-8

    Students will start by learning how to make simple sketches of animals. Then they'll work on designs for creating their favorite zoo animals in three dimensions, using cardboard, paints, and other materials. Finally, the whole class will be encouraged to work together to make a model zoo in which to display our creatures for our mini open house on the last day.
     
    Knitting

    Instructors of Chelsea Cook's Little Hands Creations
    Learn the art of knitting and crochet! Knitting is calming, relaxing and keeps us centered because of its repetitive, rhythmic movements. Beginners will start slowly with finger knitting, before moving on to knitting needles and our handy Knifty Knitter Looms. Projects include bookmarks, stuffed animals, hats, headbands, pouches and more!
     
    Jewelry Making

    Instructors of Chelsea Cook's Little Hands Creations
    Take your accessory game to the next level with our jewelry design class! Students will start with simple projects like shrinky dinks, clay beads and macrame, and then move on to more complex techniques with wire wrapping, chain and leather work, beading and weaving. Students will create layered necklaces, chandelier earrings, gemstone rings and more. Supplies include organic and repurposed materials, fun gemstones, studs and rhinestones.
     
    Cake Decorating: Creating Fun Cake Toppers

    A cute customized cake topper goes a long way towards making a dessert that friends and family will rave about! Students will learn the secrets to successful cake toppers to help them turn their next cakey creation into something almost too good to eat. Students will learn the basics of getting started, selecting the correct medium, design options, personal skill level, and sizing for their projects. We’ll be using fondant and gum paste for our creations. Students will take home a treat almost every day.
     
    Fabulous Funky Plushies
    Ages 9-14

    Plushies are wonderful, cuddly stuffed toys. Students will be in The Evergreen School's makerspace, the BIG Lab, this week, sewing their own plushies. Students will design some of their own cute and cool plushies and glam and geeky plushies, during this hands-on creative week.
     
    Wire Sculpture
    Ages 9-14

    Instructor: Shellwyn Badger
    Students will learn how to create art with wire sculpture! This pliable medium is great for children who love to work with their hands. First, we'll create sketches of how we envision our sculptures, and then we’ll handle the wire and create 3D pieces based on our sketches. Students will have the opportunity to create at least three pieces and then share the results at our mini open house on the last day.

    Building and Architecture
    Ages 6-8

    Instructor: Hope Frazier- Building and architectural challenges all week! Students will be challenged to build structures that support a dictionary, survive a mini-earthquake, and reach the ceiling; all while having a great time. Class discussion will include cool facts about the buildings around us. We'll also be making our own structures out of everything from sugar cubes to cement we made ourselves.
     
    Picture Book Design Thinking
    Ages 6-8

    Engineers solve problems by making things that work or by making things better. We’re in The Evergreen School's innovation makerspace, the BIG Lab, this week using cardboard, paint, and other tools to build solutions to problems set forth in picture books. For example, after reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff, how else could the goats have gotten across the river? Design a solution for them! What about Olympig!, where Boomer participates in the Animal Olympics but has trouble with the pole vault—what could we design to help him?
     
    Design Your Own Hero
    Ages 7-9

    There are plenty of princes, princesses, and heroes in our world … but how many of them look, act, and think like us? In this class there will be elements of storytelling centered around a comic book writing and presentation style. This is a class where we’re designing the idols of our dreams and completing a story panel to take home by the end of the week. This is an imaginative creative writing and drawing class.
     
    Speak … Eat … Spanish!

    Each day, this class will take a look at the culture, food, and language of a different Spanish-speaking country. Over the week, we’ll discuss all the ways in which countries that share the same language can really be so different. We’ll be immersed in Latin and Spanish culture all week while we’re cooking and participating in fun Spanish lessons.
     
              
    Flash Fiction
    Ages 9-11

    Instructor: Sophie Taylor
    Students will read and discuss short stories and vignettes, and learn to write short but powerful stories, drawing on the powers of imagery and suggestion. Students will learn not only to produce stories, but to edit for length—the best writing is efficient, and students will use the workshopping process to help one another write efficient, creative prose. Students will also participate in the Six Word Story challenge, made famous by "For sale: baby shoes, never worn," attributed to Hemingway.

  • Outdoor Education

    Hiking & Berry Picking
    Ages 9-12

    Students will hike each day in search of outdoor beauty and nature's best snack: berries! Students will learn to identify common berries such as raspberries, strawberries, salmonberries, blackberries, loganberries and other berries that are in season depending on the weather. Hikes will vary between four and seven miles long. Students should wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots and bring a water bottle and lunch.
     
    Intermediate Rock Climbing
    Ages 10-14

    This course is for climbers who want to further their skills. The first three days will be spent focusing on climbing techniques at a local climbing gym. On Thursday, we will head out for a two-day climbing adventure exploring the outdoor crags of Mt. Erie. We will camp at a campground nearby so we can maximize our time on the rock.     Creative Drama: Magical Kingdoms

    In our Magical Kingdoms class, students will travel to faraway places and explore the secrets and mysteries hidden in the walls of ancient castles. Using their bodies and voices, students will bring to life stories featuring wizards, witches, dragons, queens and kings, and all the characters that are in the castles of their imaginations. Each day is filled with stories, craft projects, games, and movement. On the final day, students will act out a story for friends and family.
     
    Beginning Ukulele
    Instructor: Andrew Rudd

    Students can learn the basics of playing the ukulele in just one week. This class is taught with games, other fun activities, strumming songs and learning chords. Students may bring their own instrument or they may use one of our ukuleles.
     
    Tech Theater: Costume Crew for Honk
    Ages 10-14

    Students in this class are part of the magic behind the scenes of our Honk musical. As a member of the small crew of costume assistants, students will be altering costumes, assisting with hair and make-up, and organizing quick costumes changes. This is a fun, project-packed theater class for the aspiring designer. By enrolling in this class, students are making a commitment to being present for both performances on Friday August 2 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to assist with costuming.
     
    Tech Theater: Backstage Crew for Honk
    Ages 10-14

    Students in this class are part of the magic behind the scenes of our Honk musical. This small team of students will learn about the technical elements of focusing lights, operating a sound board, and being on the backstage crew, shifting scenic elements in time with musical transitions. By enrolling in this class, students are making the commitment to being present for both performances on Friday, August 2 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to run all backstage tech.
     
    Musical Production: Honk
    Ages 11-14

    Two weeks. Two shows on Friday, August 2: one at 3:00 p.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. in the Evergreen Theater. Full attendance on all 10 days of rehearsal and for both performances is required for participation. Children 11 and 12 years old should only participate in one of our summer musicals (Frozen or Honk).
    Calling actors, singers and dancers! The Evergreen School Summer Performing Arts Program is producing the second of two big shows this summer and we need your talent! In this two-week production class, students become members of a small cast, and each day is filled with fun activities that build skills in musical theater performance. Every student enrolled receives a copy of the music, a rehearsal cd and the script in advance of rehearsals. Auditions take place on the first day of class. On the last day, August 2, in partnership with our Backstage Crew and Costume Crew classes, actors will present two big performances (3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.). complete with sets, costumes and lights. This performing arts program has a team of five experienced teaching artists all led by Evergreen’s Vanessa Miller.

    Basketball for Girls and Boys

    An opportunity for the children to learn the fundamental skills of basketball. They will learn some new skills with the sport and play friendly games with minimal competition. Players should join us for skill building and healthy game competition. The perfect camp for the beginning to intermediate level basketball player.

    Beginning and Advanced Skateboarding
    Ages 6-10

    Instructors of Skate IA, Inc.
    Students will learn the basic moves of skateboarding, including safety, balance and fun. They will progress onto a launch ramp as they're ready. Skateboards and safety gear are provided for your child to use for the week (except for helmets); please provide your child with a helmet. A parent-signed waiver form will be required for your child to participate in this class.

    Flag Football for Girls and Boys

    Is your child eager to play football, but you’re not quite ready for the helmet, pads and tackling? Enroll your child in our flag football camp! This is a fantastic activity that offers the challenge, strategy, running and play of regular, rough-and-tumble football—all without the impact.
