  • Fine Arts

    Cool Summer Cooking & Baking

    No ovens required. Fruit coolers, frozen yogurt pops, and fruit leather are just a few of the yummy and nutritious snacks children will be making to help keep cool this summer. This class also includes many academic skills, as we’ll learn about food groups, science, and health and safety with cooking and baking. Finally, we will put together our own recipe book to take home!
     
    Fashion Design

    This week, students will tap into their fashion design abilities by drawing, designing, and sewing a complete look from their own imagination. After sketching their design, students will take a field trip to Jo Ann Fabrics, where they’ll select their supplies. (All supplies included in the price of the class.) On our final day, we’ll have a fashion show in the classroom. This class has a prerequisite of a Beginners Sewing Class from Little Hands Creations.

    Butterflies

    Our class will learn all about butterflies this week. Curriculum for this class is presented through books, puppetry, science of the butterfly life cycle, games, some math, and crafts.

    I’m a Scientist

    Science is all around you every day in everything you do! In this class, we’ll ask questions all week and conduct fun, interesting experiments inspired by what we see anywhere and everywhere. We will be taking a close scientific look at eggs, crystals, ice cubes and even volcanoes!   
     
    Junior Math Olympics

    Students will spend the week playing games of strategy, risk, mental mathematical gymnastics, and physical feats of coordination and strength! We will work collaboratively to solve problems, stimulate students’ creative thinking, and develop mathematical reasoning. Students of all levels will be challenged and supported.
     
    Coding with Kids

    These classes are designed for beginners as well as children who have already been exposed to computer programming. Using drag-and-drop programming environments, students complete a sequence of increasingly difficult coding challenges. The children learn key programming concepts, practice them in fun exercises, and create their first computer programs and games. Students can access their projects online and continue working on them at home.
     
    Upcycled Engineering

    Students are exploring engineering and design this week with materials just waiting to be reused and upcycled! It’s hands-on making and creating with cardboard, plastic and more as we focus on experiments, design challenges and projects in our innovation lab, the BIG Lab makerspace.

    Paleontologist Fun

    If your child is a would-be paleontologist, then this science-based class is for them. Students will be exploring the world of dinosaurs with paleontology, geology and archeology. Fun, hands-on activities learning all about dinosaurs from times long ago… and even today. (The chickenosaurus project sounds interesting!)
     
    Mindfulness Matters & More

    If your child is curious about the state of mindfulness and loves art, then this is the perfect summer class! This relaxing class is a weeklong exploration of mindfulness practices. We will be creating make-and-take mindfulness tools that are both beautiful and useful, as well as practicing mindfulness through various art media. Children will go home with a mind jar, a zen garden, and much more.
     
    Math ~ Problems and Probability

    Students will learn about all the different ways probability affects our lives. We'll be playing games in which knowing about probability gives you a leg up on your competition. Using probability, we'll also be making predictions and conducting experiments to answer the great mysteries of our time, such as, Are there really more brown M&Ms than blue ones?
     
    Python Programming for Mathy Folks
    Instructor: Elizabeth Moore

    Can you find the 10,001st prime number? How about simulating a casino game? The spread of the zombie apocalypse? Where should the fire station be? Applying a bit of math and some coding skills, the students can solve all these problems and find ways to apply math and programming while exploring mathy ideas and applications.
     
  • Outdoor Education

    Day Hiking Basics

    There’s no better way to spend summer days than hiking in and around our beautiful Seattle! These day hikes are light and simple, ideal for the young and beginner hiking enthusiast. This camp is designed to teach the value of hiking while simply enjoying the outdoors. Each morning we'll head out for a hike with plenty of rest stops, nature education, and fun along the way. Children must bring a light backpack to sufficiently carry their lunch and water bottle. They must also have tie-up sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. We'll be visiting parks with beach access, and plan to get a little wet and dirty each day!

    Environment Art in Nature

    Classes will begin with an overview, discussion, and student sketch session based on various artists—Andy Goldsworthy, Cornelia Konrads, and others—whose work directly responds to nature. The teacher supports and facilitates students with their art projects by extending their creative ideas and helping plan logistics. Best of all, we create our projects in nature via outdoor park trips Monday through Thursday. Each class wraps up with a reflection and preparation for our Friday art day.
     
    Hiking & Berry Picking
    Instructor: Lina Rose

    We will drive to a different picking location each day, eat our fill of berries, and enjoy nature at the same time. Students will learn to identify common berries such as raspberries, strawberries, salmonberries, blackberries, loganberries and other berries that come into season depending on the weather. Students should be prepared for lots of time in the sun. We will visit various farms and hiking trails in the surrounding areas. Students should bring a water bottle, snack, lunch and a long-sleeve shirt to wear when picking from prickly bushes.

    All Things Percussion

    The world of percussion is virtually endless. In this class students will discover how a fun musical instrument is always within reach. We will cover the basics of rhythm, play lots of group activities, and explore some really cool drums! No percussion experience necessary.
     
    Electronic Music
    Instructor: Michael Erickson

    What is electronic music? It is a hip music genre. In this class, children will have a chance to work with a professional electronic music recording artist and learn how to create this type of music. The children will learn how to use the recording software Ableton Live to make beats, dance tracks, soundscapes, and original compositions.
     
    Tech Theater: Costume Crew ~ Madagascar

    Students in this class are part of the magic behind the scenes of Madagascar. As a member of the small crew of costume assistants, students will be altering costumes, assisting with hair and makeup, and organizing quick costumes changes. This is a fun, project-packed theater class for the aspiring designer. PLEASE NOTE: By enrolling in this class, students are making a commitment to being present for both performances on Friday, August 3 at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm. to assist with costuming.
     
    Tech Theater: Backstage Crew ~ Madagascar 
    Instructors: Craig Wollam and Suzy Tucker

    Students in this class are part of the magic behind the scenes of Madagascar. This small team of students will learn about the technical elements of focusing lights, operating a sound board, and being on the backstage crew, shifting scenic elements in time with musical transitions. PLEASE NOTE: By enrolling in this class, students are making the commitment to being present for both performances on Friday, August 3 at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm. to run all backstage tech.
     
    Musical Production ~ Madagascar

    Two shows on Friday August 3: one at 3:00 p.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. in The Evergreen Theater. Full attendance on all 10 days of rehearsal and for both performances is required for participation. Children 11 and 12 years old may only participate in one of our summer musicals (Seussical or Madagascar). 
    Calling actors, singers, and dancers! The Evergreen School Summer Performing Arts Program is producing the second of two big shows this summer and we need your talent! In this two-week production class, students become members of a small cast, and each day is filled with fun activities that build skills in musical theater performance. Every student enrolled receives a copy of the music, a rehearsal cd and the script in advance of rehearsals. Auditions take place on the first day of class. On the last day, August 3, in partnership with our Backstage Crew and Costume Crew classes, actors will present two big performances (at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm) complete with sets, costumes and lights. This performing arts program has a team of five experienced teaching artists all led by Evergreen’s Vanessa Miller.

    Playground games are physically and mentally challenging and support both social and conflict-resolution skills. We’ll introduce new games as well as play some of our old-time favorites. All the games are excellent in supporting healthy endurance and dexterity. Most are cooperative in nature but there may be a few where some light competition is encouraged.  
     
    Parkour Kids

    A great introduction to parkour in a safe, supportive environment. For our younger students, it’s all about introducing the children to the sport, encouraging confidence with movement, and having fun. Focus is on development of those early motor skills. For the older students, we’ll have them using blocks and bars to learn the fundamentals of the sport. The children are running, jumping, vaulting, climbing, swinging, rolling, and working on safe ground movements.
     
    Beginning and Advanced Skateboarding

    Students will learn the basics of skateboarding, which include safety, balance, and fun. They will progress onto a launch ramp as they’re ready. Skateboards and safety gear are provided for your child to use for the week (except for helmets); please provide your child with a helmet. A parent-signed waiver form will be required for your child to participate in this camp.
     
    Basketball for Girls and Boys

    A great opportunity to learn the fundamental skills of basketball. Children will hone some new skills and play friendly games with minimal competition. All players welcome!
